Terumi Echols Named President and Publisher of IVP

WESTMONT, IL—��ñ��/USA has named Terumi Echols as president and publisher of ��ñ�� Press (IVP). Echols succeeds Jeff Crosby who recently became president and chief executive officer of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), the trade association of Christian publishing. Before coming to IVP, Echols worked for nearly two decades at Christianity Today International, with roles including chief publishing officer and publisher of Christianity Today.

“Terumi Echols was a key contributor and visionary to many, if not most, of the advances ��ñ�� Press made during my time as its publisher,” Crosby said. “As IVP’s new president and publisher, she brings vision, a passion for sustained growth, and a deep understanding of the Press’s mission to the university, the church, and the world. I believe very bright days are ahead for IVP under Echols’s leadership.”

“By selecting someone with Terumi’s business savvy, we are making a clear statement: ��ñ�� Press intends to invest in growth,” said DeeDee Wilson, ��ñ��/USA’s chief financial officer. “While she was at Christianity Today, Terumi championed new product lines, diversified the list of contributors, and increased revenue. We expect her to lead with that same entrepreneurial vision. We want more authors to reach more readers and more bookselling partners to serve more customers.”

Echols, who currently serves as IVP’s director of finance and fulfillment operations, assumes the role with five initiatives launching: the new IVP Kids imprint; Every Voice Now, which supports and amplifies voices of color within publishing; the Disruptors podcast, hosted by IVP author Esau McCaulley (Reading While Black) and coproduced with Christianity Today; the Seminary Now digital learning platform; and the IVP Signature Collection, which provides refreshed bestselling backlist titles from across ��ñ�� Press’s seventy-five year history.

Terumi’s life, as a woman of color and publishing veteran, reflects those values.”

“For nearly seventy-five years, ��ñ�� Press has changed the way the church thinks and believes,” said Greg Jao, ��ñ��/USA’s chief communications officer, who served on the search team along with Wilson and Lin. “It introduced Americans to British leaders like John Stott and J. I. Packer and to cultural critics like Francis Schaeffer and Os Guinness. It trained millions to study Scripture inductively through LifeGuide^® Bible Studies, to distill biblical scholarship through the IVP Bible Dictionary Series project, and to mine the church’s history through the Ancient Christian Commentary series. More recently it invited people into spiritual formation with authors such as Suzanne Stabile, Sharon Garlough Brown, and Ruth Haley Barton, and it elevated diverse voices such as Esau McCaulley, Soong-Chan Rah, and Sheila Wise Rowe. Terumi has the experience and insight to build on this legacy so that the gospel reaches more deeply and more broadly.”

Christianity Today recognized five IVP books for their 2019 Book of the Year Award:

75 Years of Witness on Campus

��ñ�� Christian Fellowship officially began our campus ministry in the United States on November 14, 1941, the day we were incorporated. Campus fellowships had already been active at several U.S. colleges for a few years, however.

In 1941 ��ñ��’s founder, Stacey Woods, directed a three-person staff, operating out of a Chicago office that was shared with the Christian Workers Foundation. Today, 75 years later, ��ñ��’s national office is in Madison, Wisconsin, and staff workers and volunteers across the U.S. total more than 2,000. ��ñ�� has 1,011 chapters on 667 U.S. college campuses, working with more than 40,000 core students and faculty.

“We are currently experiencing one of the most stimulating periods in our history,” said current ��ñ�� president Tom Lin. “The number of students and faculty coming to faith in Jesus Christ through ��ñ�� has doubled over the past 10 years. At the same time, we are experiencing more challenges to our work on campus than in any time in recent memory.”

The vibrancy of ��ñ��’s current ministry stems in part from new specialized outreaches to athletes, arts students, and fraternity and sorority members as well as to ethnic minority groups and international students, as ��ñ�� seeks to share the good news about Jesus with every campus community. ��ñ��’s 2015-2016 Annual Report highlights the ways that ��ñ�� staff and student leaders are trying to reach every corner of one specific campus: University of California, Santa Barbara.

While we are using innovative new methods to communicate with students, such as interactive mobile art displays called Proxe Stations, the mainstays of campus ministry continue to be small group inductive Bible studies, daily prayer meetings, and weekend retreats. ��ñ�� alumni can be found living out their faith on NBA basketball courts, in outer space, in scientific research laboratories, as CEOs, as hip hop artists, in school classrooms, on the mission field, and in a myriad of other careers.

��ñ�� has shaped the lives of students in other ways. In 1946 ��ñ�� hosted a conference in Toronto, Canada, initiating what has become the triennial Urbana Student Missions Conference. Urbana was based on the University of Illinois campus for most of its history, moving to St. Louis, Missouri, in 2006. Hundreds of thousands of students have attended an Urbana conference, with many responding to the call to dedicate their lives to God’s global mission.

Christians of all ages have also been influenced by ��ñ�� Press books. Currently there are more than 1,700 IVP titles in print, and IVP is known as a leader in the industry for publishing thoughtful Christian books. IVP books consistently win recognition among the top books in Christian publishing.

“The vision of ��ñ�� is to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed, and world changers developed,” Lin said. “We believe the most impactful Christian witness we can have is to the future world leaders who are now students on our college campuses.”

Looking Back at 47 Years on Staff

��ñ�� Press (IVP) publisher and ��ñ�� vice president Bob Fryling has a lot of friends. Many are long-term relationships that go back to when he began his career as an ��ñ�� campus staff member 47 years ago. But Bob enjoys his acquaintances among newer staff just as much, noting that individuals with a like-minded spiritual curiosity and eagerness to follow God’s leading seem to find a natural home in ��ñ��.

“I’m grateful for the DNA of ��ñ��, things that capture the imagination and dig deeply into the soul such as the love for Scripture,” he said, speaking at a recent chapel service at ��ñ��’s National Service Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

During Bob’s almost 20 years at IVP, IVP has been consistently recognized as a Best Christian WorkPlace. With more than 1,700 titles in print, IVP books also consistently win awards for their quality. And IVP has published more than 15 million Bible study guides.

Bob’s love for Bible study flourished as an ��ñ�� student, preceding his time on staff, as he began the practice of a daily quiet time. “That discipline to daily ask, ‘What does the Bible say?’ is one of the reasons I’ve stayed with ��ñ��,” he said.

Bob illustrated his talk with references to the Rembrandt painting The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, ��ñ�� has weathered some storms, but maintaining our focus on Jesus as Lord has kept the ministry afloat. He identified three practices of following Jesus that he has found most significant about his time with ��ñ��.

A focus on unity. “Genuine Christian unity,” he said, “is a love of commitment that overcomes diversity, that overcomes difference, and says that because we love one another, we will be a witness to the world that Jesus has come in the flesh… Unity is desperately needed in our world.”
Kingdom intentionality. Bob recalled the message by Black evangelist Tom Skinner at Urbana 70, when he challenged White evangelical silence about racism. In the same message he spoke on the militancy of vocational calling. “He called for a kingdom that was shaped by the Spirit of God and by the Word of God,” Bob said. “That had a profound effect on all of us who were on staff at that time and what it meant to have a kingdom vocational calling.” Bob also noted, “Our commitment to multiethnicity is not a commitment to PC values. It’s a commitment to kingdom values.”
A Great Commandment imperative to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor. “We don’t have a simplistic vision of what it means to be a disciple,” he said. ”We want to be involved with what God is doing in the world and follow him. We care about issues of truth. And we act on that truth out of love.”

Bob concluded by encouraging his listeners to stay focused on the mission of reaching the campus with the gospel: “This is a great movement of God that he has used for decades and will continue to use for the sake of his work on campus and in the world.”

(Madison, WI) ---��ñ�� Christian Fellowship has begun a search for a publisher for ��ñ�� Press, a national leader among Christian publishers. Bob Fryling has announced that he will retire as the publisher of ��ñ�� Press in June 2016.

Since its inception in 1947, IVP has been a key part of ��ñ�� Christian Fellowship’s ministry, annually publishing a wide range of titles designed to equip and encourage people to follow Jesus as Savior and Lord in all of life. IVP has been recognized by broader audiences for the quality of books it produces. From rigorous academic texts to practical small group discussion guides, incisive cultural analyses to invitations to spiritual formation, IVP titles serve the campus, church, and the world.

IVP to Publish CaringBridge Cancer Journey of Steve & Sharol Hayner

WESTMONT, ILLINOIS—Steve Hayner was healthy and fit and serving as president of Columbia Seminary when he found out he had pancreatic cancer. He and his wife, Sharol, embarked on a journey together with their children that soon included tens of thousands of visits from friends and acquaintances via CaringBridge. The overwhelming response to their posts on this website attested to the surprising and engaging way that they chose to live in the face of death. In July 2015 ��ñ�� Press will be releasing a compilation of those posts in the book Joy in the Journey: Finding Abundance in the Shadow of Death by Steve and Sharol Hayner.

Steve was always known for signing letters and emails, “Joyfully, Steve.” These pages, including reflections from some of those closest to Steve and Sharol, will offer a glimpse into what it means to walk in honesty, with joy, even through great pain. “On the journey of life, we need scouts ahead of us who send back guidance and encouragement,” Sharol said. “As scouts in the valley of the shadow of death, I hope that our discovery of God’s faithfulness, presence and gift of joy especially on the darkest days will bring courage and the desire to trust Jesus in life and in death.”

Steve was the president emeritus of Columbia Theological Seminary and an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), as well as a professor, author and the former president of ��ñ�� Christian Fellowship. He held a PhD in Hebrew and Semitic Studies from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He served on the boards of World Vision and International Justice Mission, among others. Known by many throughout the world, Steve’s passion was to prepare women and men to lead congregations toward the fulfillment of God’s call as churches who are biblically faithful and growing steadily in their love for God, their love for each other and their love for Christ’s work in the world.

“Steve Hayner has been first a hero and then a friend since I met him many years ago,” said John Ortberg, senior pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. “He was a people magnet and an idea machine and an energy force. To follow the journey that he and Sharol traveled together through the valley of the shadow of death was a privilege and a heartbreak and an education in hope. I’m grateful their searing, aching, honest, inspiring words are now permanently available. I cannot imagine a human being who would not benefit from it.”

Sharol has been serving in ministry for over forty years with her husband, Steve. She served as children’s music director at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle and as children’s music director and worship coordinator at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison, Wisconsin. At age forty-eight she began seminary, and ultimately graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Ordained in the PCUSA, she served as associate pastor for discipleship at Peachtree Presbyterian Church and now serves as parish associate at Kairos Church, both in Atlanta. She has three children and five grandchildren.

“I worked at ��ñ�� Press during Steve Hayner’s tenure and saw the lasting impact he had on our organizational culture,” said Cindy Bunch, editorial director for IVP Books. “It has been a privilege to work on this book project with Sharol, so filled with both beauty and pain. They are both, for me, mentors in the way of life and death.”

Joy in the Journey will include forewords by Steve’s close friends, Mark Labberton, president of Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California, and Alex Gee, pastor of Fountain of Life Family Worship Center and president and founder of faith-based Nehemiah Community Development Corporation, both in Madison, Wisconsin.

“Seldom have I been as moved as in reading these epistles from Steve and Sharol Hayner ending ‘Joyfully yours,’” said Leighton Ford. “Through his life Steve helped so many to find life in all its fullness in Christ. Now, with his beloved Sharol, he guides us through the ending of life in fullness of hope. Thanks to ��ñ�� Press for what I believe will become a classic.”
