This was celebrated earlier in the year during a meeting of the faculty fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). As the faculty members and administrators gathered at the University Club, they were regaled with memories of the days when Dallas was a UW graduate student.

Dallas received his Ph.D. in philosophy at the UW, living and studying in Madison from 1959 to 1965. He was hired at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1965 and taught philosophy there for the next 47 years, until just before his death in 2013. Along the way, Dallas also became a leading evangelical writer and speaker, influencing many thousands through books like The Divine Conspiracy.

Gary Moon’s biography, Becoming Dallas Willard (ñ Press), describes the five years spent in Madison as a graduate student and lecturer as a critical time for Dallas. Despite having previously attended three Christian colleges, being ordained in a Baptist Church in 1956, and pastoring at two churches, Dallas still looked for a transformational faith. “I was almost terminally ignorant about God and soul,” he said later.

Discovering Spiritual Disciplines

At UW, Dallas discovered a new dimension of faith through the practice of spiritual disciplines. “What I had thought were merely the discarded practices of futile religion were actually things that, if rightly used, would help people change,” he observed.

One of the spiritual disciplines that Dallas practiced was the regular Sunday night fellowship with a handful of other graduate students in the home of UW Geography professor John Alexander, who was the ñ undergraduate chapter faculty sponsor, and soon to become ñ president.

"He (Alexander) felt that there was a need for something for the grads; he opened his home on Prospect Drive for us,” recalled Mary Daniel, emeritus professor in the UW Department of Spanish and Portuguese. “At Dr. A’s house nothing was off limits. You could ask anything.”

In the foreword to the study guide for The Divine Conspiracy, Dallas attributed many of the basic teachings from the book to this formative period. “Part of the first chapter comes from graduate school days when I was active in ñ Christian Fellowship,” he wrote.

What Dallas appreciated about ñ, he said at another time, “was that capacity to be biblically serious, to hold to the central teachings of what Lewis called ‘Mere Christianity,’ and yet to be open enough to be willing to discuss anything.”

The Dilemma

Dallas faced a hard choice as his time at UW came to a close. He received his Ph.D. in 1965, and during the previous year he had not only been a UW lecturer, but he also pastored the Arena Congregational Church in a small town outside of Madison. Would he return to the pulpit as a full-time pastor or follow philosophy into the academy? What would it be, the pulpit or the classroom?

Finally, the answer came. “The Lord said to me, ‘If you stay in the churches the university will be closed to you. But, if you stay in the university, the churches will be open to you.’ I knew the Lord said it to me because I sure didn't have enough sense to understand what it meant at the time,” he concluded.

So Dallas accepted the invitation from USC to move to California. He became a fixture in the philosophy department, chairman from 1982-1985, and recipient of the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1977.

Joe Thackwell, ñ’s Director of University Partnerships, got to know Dallas and his wife Jane as he planted a graduate student and faculty chapter at USC. He learned that Dallas would write his phone number on the board and tell students they could call anytime, “although if it was dinner time he may not answer.” Joe noted, “The call to pastor through his professorship was a family call that implicated his whole life in the way that missionary and pastor’s families often experience.”

Dallas spent hours and hours listening to students in his office and made a habit of long lunches with students and faculty, engaging them deeply. “He also made himself available to the whole Christian community at USC,” Joe said. “When he taught at the Trojan Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship the numbers swelled.”

Working with former students and current USC staff, Joe established a memorial plaque that now hangs in Mudd Hall, the home of the USC Philosophy Department. The plaque lists four worldview questions that Dallas used in his lectures and listed in his book, Knowing Christ Today. Joe believes that it is the only such memorial to a professor on the USC campus.

Dallas almost never said no to an invitation to speak. Through his counseling, books, and lectures about Christian living he was able to disciple as many people as a professor as he could have as a pastor, maybe more. And the formative fellowship he attended during his UW days illustrates the importance of graduate student ministry.

<a class="button-action" "He was also first to publish other influential figures such as Os Guinness and philosopher C. Stephen Evans. But his finely tuned radar for quality was not limited to the academy. He had a major influence on the church when he saw the potential in the poetry of Calvin Miller's The Singer, the power for church renewal in the work of Howard Snyder, as well as the evangelistic insight of Rebecca Manley Pippert. As this past weekend at University of Virginia demonstrates, universities also serve as the backdrop for ideas and idols that deface and destroy life. We believe the Gospel calls us to confront and denounce sins like white supremacy. We also want to offer the transforming hope of repentance and new life to the people who propagate these ideologies.”

With a new six-member Executive Leadership Team and 10 new vice presidents assembled over the past year, ñ has reaffirmed our commitment to our vision of transformation and renewal. “We are longing to see God bring new life in new ways on campuses across the country, and to catalyze movements that call every corner of every campus to follow Jesus,” Lin said, as he reflected on his first year as president. “We want to see systems and structures, ideas and idols change. These leaders will help us steward our values even more closely, respond to God’s invitations more nimbly, and lead God’s mission on campus more joyfully,”

To meet the challenge of reaching every campus, ñ also has a record number of staff serving a record number of colleges, with 1341 staff ministering on 687 campuses. At the same time, the number of people coming to faith through ñ’s campus ministry is at its highest ever in ñ’s 76-year history—up 12 percent from one year ago, up 130 percent from 10 years ago.

To reach more campuses, ñ is pursuing new partnerships: “How can we best partner in reaching the approximately 2,600 campuses currently unreached by any major campus ministry?” Lin asked. “Could we empower more churches and other ministries to work alongside us to reach the campus? Beyond U.S. partnerships, what could God do if we more intentionally sought out best thinking and practices from our sister movements in the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students?”

In his travels during his first year as president, Lin said that he has heard regularly from people he meets about how ñ staff and ñ Press books have changed their lives. But he stressed that student-driven ministry is the heart of ñ’s mission. “Our chapter planting leadership team has done an amazing job creating a planting culture in ñ,” he said. “Not just staff but student leaders are catching the vision and reaching out to neighboring campuses. These students are not simply sheep to be gathered, but seed to be scattered.”

ñ is an interdenominational ministry to students and faculty on U.S. college and university campuses, working with more than 41,000 core students and faculty on 687 campuses nationwide. ñ is a founding member of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, advancing Christian student work in 160 countries. ñ is also a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.

<div class="_none block block-layout-builder for IVP and vice president for ñ starting July 1, 2016. Fryling will retire in June after nineteen years of leading IVP.

Jim Lundgren, interim president for ñ, led the search process for a publisher. He said, “In announcing Jeff’s appointment, I am filled with thankfulness for the leadership Bob Fryling has given since July of 1997. The strength of ñ Press today is in large part due to Bob and to the leadership team he has assembled. Jeff will be building on a solid foundation."

Fryling and Crosby have worked alongside each other at IVP for nearly two decades, with Fryling becoming the publisher in 1997 and Crosby becoming the director of sales and marketing in 1998.

“I am excited and thankful for the selection and appointment of Jeff Crosby as the next publisher of ñ Press,” Fryling said. “I have known Jeff as a wonderful and dedicated colleague for the past eighteen years at IVP. He is a strategic thinker and leader who loves books and publishing them successfully. Jeff also builds strong relationships with authors, publishing partners and co-workers. I will miss the daily opportunity of working with Jeff, but I am glad for IVP and the Christian publishing industry that Jeff will be in this role.”

Fryling has been involved with IVCF and IVP for more than fifty years, starting as a student leader at Drexel University in 1964. He was in campus ministry for twenty-seven years, including fourteen as national director of campus ministries, and has been a vice president of ñ for thirty years.

Crosby got his start in the Christian book industry as the owner with his wife, Cindy, of a Logos bookstore in Bloomington, Indiana, from 1983 to 1993. He went on to become the executive director of the Association of Logos Bookstores from 1993 to 1996 and was in executive sales and marketing roles with the Christian divisions of Ingram Book Company for two years before he started at IVP.

“ñ Press books challenged, stimulated and nourished my faith in Christ and my understanding of Christian theology and spirituality long before I came to work with its people in Downers Grove,” Crosby said. “It’s been a privilege to serve alongside incredibly visionary and committed colleagues for the past eighteen years as we’ve published resources for the university, the church and the world in response to God’s call on us. I’m grateful for the opportunity to step into the twin roles of IVP publisher and IVCF vice president and be a part of leading us into the next chapters of our work together.”

Crosby received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ball State University in 1983 and his master’s in Leadership Studies from North Central College in 2009. As IVP’s director of sales and marketing Crosby managed sales to domestic retail accounts and the international distribution partnerships in England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and other countries. He was instrumental in launching the direct marketing program for IVP Academic’s award-winning Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture reference series, and was a primary drafter of IVP’s digital publishing strategy in 2008.

Throughout his career Crosby has led numerous workshops and spoken at conferences on the topics of publishing, marketing and management. In both 2015 and again this year, he has served the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) as the content creation leader for the sessions of its ECPA PUBu events.

Lundgren said, “Jeff brings to the publisher role vision and energy for ñ Press, a track record of experience and leadership in Christian publishing and a proven ability to develop younger leaders. He is positioned to strongly lead the press into the future. It was especially encouraging throughout the search process to hear from many authors and leaders in Christian publishing as to the high regard they have for Jeff. With his appointment IVP can engage the future with a great deal of confidence.”

For more information:
Krista Clayton
kclayton@ivpress.com
630.734.4013

News Keywords

ñ Press

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 18:34:15 +0000 gordon.govier@intervarsity.org 8953 at Looking Back at 47 Years on Staff /news/looking-back-47-years-staff

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2022-2023 Annual Report

Leadership

ñ and IFES History

News

Press Room

Contact Us

News

Gordon Govier

Looking Back at 47 Years on Staff

ñ Press (IVP) publisher and ñ vice president Bob Fryling has a lot of friends. Many are long-term relationships that go back to when he began his career as an ñ campus staff member 47 years ago. But Bob enjoys his acquaintances among newer staff just as much, noting that individuals with a like-minded spiritual curiosity and eagerness to follow God’s leading seem to find a natural home in ñ.

“I’m grateful for the DNA of ñ, things that capture the imagination and dig deeply into the soul such as the love for Scripture,” he said, speaking at a recent chapel service at ñ’s National Service Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

During Bob’s almost 20 years at IVP, IVP has been consistently recognized as a Best Christian WorkPlace. With more than 1,700 titles in print, IVP books also consistently win awards for their quality. And IVP has published more than 15 million Bible study guides.

Bob’s love for Bible study flourished as an ñ student, preceding his time on staff, as he began the practice of a daily quiet time. “That discipline to daily ask, ‘What does the Bible say?’ is one of the reasons I’ve stayed with ñ,” he said.

Bob illustrated his talk with references to the Rembrandt painting The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, ñ has weathered some storms, but maintaining our focus on Jesus as Lord has kept the ministry afloat. He identified three practices of following Jesus that he has found most significant about his time with ñ.

A focus on unity. “Genuine Christian unity,” he said, “is a love of commitment that overcomes diversity, that overcomes difference, and says that because we love one another, we will be a witness to the world that Jesus has come in the flesh… Unity is desperately needed in our world.”

Kingdom intentionality. Bob recalled the message by Black evangelist Tom Skinner at Urbana 70, when he challenged White evangelical silence about racism. In the same message he spoke on the militancy of vocational calling. “He called for a kingdom that was shaped by the Spirit of God and by the Word of God,” Bob said. “That had a profound effect on all of us who were on staff at that time and what it meant to have a kingdom vocational calling.” Bob also noted, “Our commitment to multiethnicity is not a commitment to PC values. target="_blank">Living Gently in a Violent World: The Prophetic Witness of Weakness, is the 2015 recipient of the prestigious Templeton Prize. Valued at $1.7 million, the award is given annually to someone whose work affirms the spiritual dimension of life in some way and who has contributed to the world a broader vision about what it means to be human. Vanier formally accepted the prize at a ceremony on May 18 at the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London.

As the founder of L’Arche, a network of communities around the world in which people with and without disabilities live together in mutual friendship, Vanier has been changing society’s perception of those with disabilities for many years. In his statement to the Templeton Foundation upon learning of his award, he said, “For many years these wonderful people [people with intellectual disabilities] were seen as ‘errors,’ or as the fruit of evil committed by their parents or ancestors. . . . Today we are discovering that these people have a wealth of human qualities that can change the hearts of those caught up in the culture of winning and of power.”

The Path to L’Arche

Growing up, Vanier didn’t have any plans to work with those on the margins of society. As he writes in Living Gently in a Violent World, “I knew a little about where I was coming from, but I wasn’t quite sure where I was going to.” The son of a lawyer, diplomat, and highly decorated soldier, Vanier entered Dartmouth Naval College as a thirteen-year-old, intent on becoming part of the British Royal Navy.

His parents, however, had already modeled for him a deep care for the most vulnerable. During World War II, for example, they used their diplomatic power to help Jews fleeing from Hitler acquire Canadian passports, and his mother worked with the Red Cross, serving victims who’d been held in concentration camps.

God also used Vanier’s time as a Naval officer to move him toward his lifework. Long periods of solitude on ships became times of prayer for him, during which he sensed God calling him to something besides the life of an officer. “I left the Navy in 1950, not knowing why I’d left except that I had been propelled into the gospel,” he writes. Through more prayer, theological studies, and relationships with activists, monks, and priests over the next several years, he began to discern a call from God to work with people on the margins of society.

An invitation in 1963 from a friend serving as a chaplain at an institution for people with disabilities opened Vanier’s eyes to their plight. As he visited psychiatric hospitals and similar institutions in the area, he “discovered the terrible ways people with disabilities were treated” (Living Gently).

A year later, he invited two men who were intellectually disabled to live with him as friends in a small house—which he named L’Arche, French for “ark” (a nod to Noah’s ark and an expression of his desire for the home to be a safe “boat” for people in pain to live) and “arch” (symbolizing a bridge that connects earth and heaven)—in Trosly-Breuil, a city north of Paris. The transformation he and others who visited the home experienced from living in community led to the birth of the L’Arche movement, which today includes 147 communities in 35 nations and 1,500 Faith and Light support groups in 82 nations.

Transformation through L’Arche

The power of the model is the mutual transformation that occurs when everyone in the community is viewed as a precious human being, made in God’s image. There is not caregiver and care receiver; those who live in L’Arche communities are friends who meet on the grounds of their common humanity. And both are changed. As Vanier said in the March 11 press conference for his award,

People with intellectual disabilities . . . are essentially people of the heart. When they meet others they do not have a hidden agenda for power or for success. Their . . . fundamental cry is for a relationship, a meeting heart to heart. It is this meeting that awakens them, opens them up to life, and calls them forth to love in great simplicity, freedom and openness. When those ingrained in a culture of winning and of individual success really meet them, and enter into friendship with them, something amazing and wonderful happens. They too are opened up to love and even to God. They are changed at a very deep level.

ñ students in the northwest are getting a taste of this transformation. Students from the chapter at Montana State University spent their spring break at Tahoma Hope, a L’Arche community in Tacoma, Washington. Sophomore Katya Peterson reflected after the trip: “While working at the L’Arche farm, . . . we employed our individual gifts, because, in the spirit of L’Arche, ‘together we are better.’ It was a life-changing week, and I can’t wait to go back next year!”

The Templeton Prize will allow Vanier, now 86, to continue the vital work of L’Arche—and that’s good news for both those with disabilities and those without. The coming together of those whom society typically labels as “the weak” and “the strong” remains a tangible expression of the gospel in a world that often assigns value to people based on external capabilities. As Vanier puts it in Living Gently in a Violent World:

We have to come back to the gospel vision. When I reflect on the gospel vision, I find that it is incredible. It is a promise that we human beings can get together. It is a vision of unity, peace and acceptance. It is a promise that the walls between people and between groups can fall, but this will not be accomplished by force. It will come about through a change of heart—through transformation.

For more information, see the Templeton Prize website and the press release from ñ Press.
