And we want those chapters to be communities that study Scripture and experience deep discipleship. ñ believes that getting off campus for special experiences like retreats, leadership training camps, and Global and Urban Programs are critical for students.

Over the past three years, ñ chapters brought students to 105 camps across the country. We believe we can increase the number of students who go to camps by removing barriers like long travel times and allowing chapters to use camps proximate to their campus.

As a result, over the next several years ñ will transition ownership of our three retreat and training centers: Cedar Campus in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Toah Nipi in New Hampshire, and Campus by the Sea on Catalina Island off the coast of California.

“Many of us on staff with ñ have stories about how God met us and grew our faith while at camp, so this is a difficult decision,” said ñ President Tom Lin. “But our value for camping ministry is as high as ever. We know the Lord uses time away at camp to powerfully transform students and whole chapters.”

Ninety-five percent of ñ chapters who do camping ministry currently use camps that are not owned by ñ, choosing camps that are more accessible to their campuses. For the chapters that have continued to use our camps, high travel times and costs have meant many students are simply unable to go, which has led to significant attendance declines in recent years at our camps.

ñ has begun a process of seeking ministries willing to take over ownership of each camp, starting with Cedar Campus. Programming at all three camps will continue as scheduled for all of 2019. She came for a month-long leadership camp and met her future husband as part of the experience.

Her chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was pretty small, yet it played an important role in her spiritual development. “I came from a narrow Baptist background,” she said. “Simply being with Presbyterians and other denominations, and understanding their heart for the Lord, was very important in opening up my mind.”

The leadership camp at Bear Trap Ranch offered additional opportunities for growth. There Carol developed the Bible study skills that have grounded and nurtured her Christian faith ever since. “I could feed myself spiritually, I didn’t have to be spoon-fed,” she said.

When she met Bill Galambos, he was an engineering student at the University of North Dakota. Bill switched career paths to teaching math because the job prospects were better. His teaching credentials also meant that they could choose to live wherever they wanted after they both graduated and got married. It wasn’t a hard choice.

“We had fallen in love with Bear Trap Ranch,” she said. “We knew they always needed volunteer staff, so we figured the commute would be a lot easier from Colorado than from North Dakota.”

They settled in Colorado Springs in 1962 and became regular volunteers at the ranch. “Summers, weekends, school holidays, it was automatic for the first 15 years we were in Colorado,” she said. Their two sons spent their early years exploring every corner of the camp.

Bill regularly volunteered at Bear Trap, working as a wrangler and at many other jobs, right up until he died in 2007. Carol often came with him and she could often be found working in the kitchen at Bear Trap. The living room of their small home frequently hosted the regular ñ/Bear Trap prayer meeting that’s been going on for over 60 years.

“They’re the kind of people you’d love to have as in-laws,” said Jeff Yockey, who was Bear Trap Ranch director for seven years. He always tried to encourage students to get to know Bill and Carol, because they were good role models. “They modeled lives dedicated to the Lord, living out what they had learned as ñ students.”

Because of their ñ training, they also invested a lot of volunteer time in their church, First Presbyterian. Bill taught a Sunday School class for many years, and Carol was on the missions committee, chairing the committee at one time. “I really attribute a lot of that to the basic skills of being able to do Bible study, learning to lead small groups, and having a heart for God’s kingdom world-wide,” Carol said.

Carol and Bill always tithed to their church, and devoted a second ten percent of their giving to ministries such as ñ. When they set up their will they used the concept of a child called Charity. In other words, one third went to each of their two sons and the third portion went to the ministries that were important to them.

“I so believe in ñ because of how solid and basic we insist on being,” Carol said. “It’s still prayer, Bible study and missions.”

News Keywords

Camps

ñ alumni

Fri, 18 Jul 2008 05:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 8664 at Get Away to Get Grounded /news/get-away-to-get-grounded

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2022-2023 Annual Report

Leadership

ñ and IFES History

News

Press Room

Contact Us

News

Gordon Govier

Get Away to Get Grounded

ñ’s four camps and training centers are just a few of the locations where representatives from many of ñ’s 864 chapters at colleges and universities across the country are meeting this month for Chapter Camp. Each of ñ’s 14 regions has its own Chapter Camp location. Sometimes regions pair up to do Chapter Camp together.

“Chapter Camp is perhaps one of the most strategic times for us to do basic training and planning for our students for the upcoming year,” said Chuck Hohnbaum, a veteran of almost two decades of Chapter Camps before he became ñ’s interim director of Strategic Ministries. “For our student leaders, this is the first chance for some of them to get away and spend some concentrated time together, working on their responsibilities, creating a team dynamic, looking ahead to the coming school year, and trying to understand how they can advance the mission of ñ at their school.”

A majority of Chapter Camp attendees are students who have been chosen to lead an ñ chapter on their campus for the coming school year. “Some places have a culture where if you are one of the leaders of the chapter, what some call an exec team member, you are required to go. If you accept the role, you are also saying ‘yes I will be at camp,’” Chuck said.

The number of representatives from a chapter varies from just a couple to several dozen. In addition to incoming chapter leaders, some participants come just because they want the discipleship training, manuscript Bible studies, and other training that’s offered. And often there is a small percentage of attendees who haven’t yet decided to become a Christian.

“They are attending because they have intersected with us in a meaningful way on campus,” Chuck said. “They have been invited to camp and they have come. It’s not surprising to see students come to faith during their time at Chapter Camp.”

The individual classes that are offered and the way the camp is structured, varies from region to region and from year to year, depending on what the planning staff sees as the best way to engage current students with the Gospel in the campus setting. Over the years planners have worked to create experiential learning components so that more than just lectures are offered.

Chapter Camp is often a crucial transition for ñ students. “It’s a place where those who have been on the receiving end finally step up to be on the serving end and start exercising their leadership gifts,” Chuck said. “It’s not unusual to hear alumni reflect back and say it was at a camp experience of some type where their faith matured in a significant way. It’s a sign post in the journey of their life; they can look back and see it.”

News Keywords

Camps

Discipleship

Thu, 15 May 2008 05:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 7818 at A Song of Joy /news/a-song-of-joy

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2022-2023 Annual Report

Leadership

ñ and IFES History

News

Press Room

Contact Us

News

A Song of Joy

Every summer students from campuses across the country meet for an intensive month of leadership development at Cedar Campus, called the School of Leadership Training. While most students leave the school well-prepared to lead their campus chapters, a remarkable number of them also leave with extraordinary stories of personal transformation. Bette, a senior at Western Michigan University, attended SLT this past summer. This is what she has to say about her time at camp:

I can safely say that my month at SLT was the best month of my life! The Lord drew me into a sacred space of rest and joy in Him that will stay with me forever. Even upon arrival, as I pulled my car into Cedar Campus, I could feel the Lord’s love and blessing wash over me. He led me into a season of spring at Cedar Campus, where He would ultimately teach me what it means to walk in joy and be filled by the Lord’s intimate love for me.

The year prior to SLT was a hard year, a year full of depression and wrestling with sin. It was a year of God’s pruning in my life – His deep work in my heart to tear out all the sinful habits and areas of brokenness. Yet, as I approached SLT, I could physically feel the weight of all that I had been enslaved to – my identity placed on what others thought, my performance judged against others, and my physical beauty compared to cultural expectations – fall off of me.

During one of the first sessions “Christ and Culture,” the Holy Spirit began to reveal to me all of the areas that Jesus had been working hard to free me in the past few years. As I sat there, I started to cry with joy and thankfulness, because I realized all that I had wrestled through in the previous year was a way of God crucifying those sins and rescuing me from them. I finally felt free.

That freedom came with a release of joy uncontainable . . . an unearthly joy so great that others named me “sunshine ball.” As I began to walk in this joy in the first few days, it felt like an explosion had happened in me – and each day was full of the Lord’s doting on me through His nature, encouragement from others, and elation with every activity we did.

I realize now that the Lord was building a foundation of joy within me to sustain me through future trials. The experience at SLT taught me what it means to walk in that joy, and walk in my identity in Christ – a beautiful, loved daughter of a king.

There is no better way to explain what the Lord had been doing in me than my reflection in a quiet time to the Lord after reading Psalm 126:

7/25/07

*Psalm 126*

When the LORD brought back the captives to [a] Zion, we were like men who dreamed.

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”

The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev.

Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.

He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.

Oh Lord! This is my prayer! What a reflection of how You’ve been working in my life. You have restored me. You have filled my mouth with laughter and my tongue with songs of joy. You have done great things for me and You delight in making me the object of Your blessing. You have restored my fortune like streams in the Negev. How wonderful You are my Lord. You are too good for words!

My hope and joy lies in You and You alone-my satisfaction and delight is in YOU. You, my God, the object of my affection. The cause for my joy and great abundance. It is with You I rejoice O Lord, my God- for bringing me from a desert wasteland into an oasis of abundance, fruit and joy. I leap and dance and sing with praises beautifying my lips for You- for You are faithful, my God, You have rescued me from my own destruction. How good You are to me!

The years and months I have sowed with tears I now reap with joy. And what a bountiful harvest it is. You are good, Lord, and I delight in You!

Lord, may I return with even more sheaves of joy! Continue to open up new petals of this Daffodil so I may reflect Your joy and beauty! Oh God, You are my God, the living God, and there is none like You!

Lord, it is so beautiful to see how You were carving and crafting me into something beautiful, that the pain of Your potter’s knife digging into me was with purpose towards the end result. That every agonizing trial and suffering was with deliberate intention to shape me into more of Your glory and a reflection of Your beauty. What a wonderful artist You are!

You still are carrying out Your work in me and I am like an unfinished canvas…a painting still not completely clear in its expression- but someday You will finish Your last stroke and I will be the finished masterpiece You set out to create. He will begin his new job on November 12, 2007.

Scot currently serves as director of Discipleship and Outreach for the Vriesland Reformed Church near Zeeland, Michigan. He brings 14 years of Christian Camping experience to his new role with ñ, including two years as program director and 12 years as executive director for Cran-Hill Ranch in Rodney, Michigan. While leading Cran-Hill, a 200-acre Christian camp, Scot increased the operating budget from $360,000 to almost a million dollars annually, and more than tripled the amount raised in annual gifts.

“Retreats and training centers provide a place for retreating away from what Richard Foster calls the ‘muchness’ and ‘manyness,’ to allow Christians to experience God in a fresh way,” Scot said. “In the noise, hurry, and crowds, it can be very difficult to hear God’s voice.”

In announcing the appointment ñ vice president Karon Morton said, “I am impressed with Scot’s teambuilding skill, deep interest in discipleship, love of the natural environment, strong attraction to college ministry, and an ability to work with individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds and ways of thinking.” As chief administrative officer, Karon oversees ñ’s camps and training centers.

Scot holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation, with an emphasis in Religion and Psychology, from Calvin College, where he served as an ñ Bible study coordinator as a student.

Scot and his wife, Monique, have four children – sons Seth, Eli, and Sean; and daughter Jessica.

For more information:
Karon Morton
608-443-3711

News Keywords

Camps

Press Release

Wed, 10 Oct 2007 05:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 7921 at Cedar Campus Hosts Christian Faculty Conference /news/cedar-campus-hosts-christian-faculty-conference

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2022-2023 Annual Report

Leadership

ñ and IFES History

News

Press Room

Contact Us

News

Cedar Campus Hosts Christian Faculty Conference

The number of identifiable Christian faculty on U.S. campuses has increased in recent decades. ñ is currently in touch with 2,700 faculty, some of whom serve as advisors to the student chapters on their campuses.

Some people see “scholar” and “committed Christian” as an impossible combination. But ñ faculty members know the two can go together—and they encourage students and colleagues to flourish spiritually as well as academically.

For a second year, a national ñ Faculty Conference was held at Cedar Campus in upper Michigan, June 16-22. It was titled “In Thy Light We See Light.” Thirteen professors (some with their families) from various academic disciplines gathered at Mariners’ Cove for the conference to wrestle with the theme “How to Develop Theological Acuity as a Non-Theologian.”

They listened to lectures by main speakers Steve Telian, a medical scientist and ear specialist at the University of Michigan hospitals, and Michael Murray, philosophy professor at Franklin and Marshall College.

Seminars included: “Genesis 1—2: Literature, Theology, and Science,” offered by Tom Trevethan, Campus Projects Associate for ñ’s Faculty Ministry, and David Blaauw, professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan; “Everyone Can Do It,” an art workshop with hands-on lessons and discussion, led by artist Dianne Telian; and faculty ministry catalyst discussions, hosted by Stan Wallace, ñ’s National Director of Faculty Ministry.

Small groups enjoyed studying The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5—7, sharing personal concerns, and praying together.

Sunday worship included exposition by Tom Trevethan and hymn singing. Songs from ñ’s Hymns II were sung with enthusiasm throughout the six days. The families appreciated the programs for the children provided by the Cedar Campus crew.

More details about this year’s conference can be found at the conference website.

Another ñ Faculty Conference is planned for June 21-27, 2008, with Dallas Willard, David Dockery, Kelly Monroe Kullberg, Mary Poplin, and Steve Simmons already confirmed as speakers. It was titled “Great God of Wonders,” and the hymn by that name became the theme song for the conference, which was planned as “a celebration of God’s majesty and wonder through hymns and Scripture.”

Over a hundred adults and children from eighteen states (coast to coast and border to border) and Canada gathered in the Old Mill Point meeting house and praised the Lord in song. Shirley Morrison and Judy Chadwick provided accompaniment on the new grand piano that was recently purchased.

Under the experienced direction of Bernie Smith (who led the singing at Urbanas 1970 through 1987) and Keith Hunt (long-time director of Cedar Campus), the group sang from both the original Hymns and Hymns II. At times the singing was augmented by a four-piece orchestra consisting of trombone, bassoon, flute, and violin.

The gathering was jointly sponsored by the ñ Hymn Society and Cedar Campus.

Dr. Walter Kaiser (Old Testament scholar and frequent speaker at Cedar Campus over the years) gave daily Bible expositions, and often the theme was picked up in the hymns that followed his teaching.

Also included in the program were optional seminars and discussions on topics, such as “Keeping the Sabbath,” “Creation Care,” and “Hosting Local Hymn Singing” as well as a Hymn Society brainstorming session.

The camp packed out the Old Mill Point site, with some people having to be housed offsite. Daily prayer for IFES was led by Dave (Sally) Ivaska each morning. Daily quiet time materials based on Scripture and hymns were written by Rusty Hunt. One of the highlights was an antiphonal singing event at the beach as the sun set over the bay (photo below).

The program was envisioned and put together by a planning group of sixteen members of the IV Hymn Society including several musicians.

The group was privileged to have with them Yvonne Woods, widow of C. Stacey Woods (the first General Secretary of ñ/USA and of IFES), and Betty Alexander, widow of John Alexander, “Dr. A” (President of ñ/USA 1965-1981).

Plans were made by the ñ Hymn Society to continue seeking ways to enjoy and encourage hymn singing. A May 10 wildfire charred over 4,000 acres around CBS, forcing its evacuation. On one side of the ridge is charred trees and ash, on the other side it’s still green.

CBS was left with a light layer of wind-blown ash. The major damage was to the camp’s connections to its water supply and utility services. As the camp crew returned, the top priorities were renting a larger generator to protect the refrigerated food supply and procuring 1700 feet of plastic hose to reconnect the water supply.

The crew worked for two weeks to make the camp operational again. They ate well–consuming defrosted food so it wouldn’t be wasted. But in order to communicate with the mainland, they were forced to hop in a CBS boat and motor a mile out to sea until they could pick up a cell phone signal.

“We have appreciated prayers, lots of encouragement, and the donations some have made to our increased expenses through this ordeal,” reports CBS director Susie Veon. “My staff team has been outstanding!”

Phone service was working, at least intermittently, by the time the first new group of campers arrived on May 24th. Susie is hoping that Southern California Edison crews will soon finish replacing the 150 utility poles lost in the fire, so that full power is restored. The raging flames got as close as the ridge-top overlooking the camp on Thursday evening, May 10, just hours after the camp was evacuated. But Friday morning camp director Susie Veon was able to report that although it looked “singed around the edges,” the camp was intact, covered by a light layer of ash.

“We are so thankful that all are safe and that God kept the fires back from our structures and main camp,” she reported later. “The passage in Job kept going through my mind and my prayers where God speaks and says to the waters, ‘this far you may come and no further, this is where your proud waves stop.’ He spoke the same to the fire for CBS. ‘This far you may come and no further. This is where your proud flames stop!’”

Over the weekend, airborne fire crews dropped water on persistent hot spots and most of the evacuated residents returned to the nearby town of Avalon. Officials pronounced the fire nearly contained.

There is no power at Campus by the Sea yet. Power is not expected to be restored until late next week at the earliest. Fire also melted the camp’s main water line. But the staff has returned from evacuation and has begun cleaning up the ash. Staff are also packing up the belongings of 135 middle school students who were participating in the annual Long Beach Marine Institute at CBS last week. The students had only time to grab warm clothing and their wallets before they were evacuated on Thursday afternoon.

One of the prime concerns now is protecting the season’s food supply, which arrived by barge about a month ago. A larger generator is being brought in to power the camp, particularly the food freezer. Last Thursday evening’s dinner for 160 remained fresh in the refrigerator and was delivered to firefighters in Avalon on Sunday.

“We have plenty of food and have gas to cook on,” Susie reports. “I am proud of my team. They were terrific and did a great job handling campers, staying in touch and – for those that stayed – helping watch and pray and be vigilant. At night we hang around by flashlight and talk and catch each other up. We have family time and prayer time. We are so thankful that all are safe and that God kept the fires back from our structures and main camp.”

Campus by the Sea is not expected to reopen until at least May 24. ñ groups which were scheduled to use CBS this week have been able to find alternate facilities. News reports say that one home and about a half dozen businesses in the Avalon area received the most significant damage from the fire. Campus by the Sea is located at Gallagher’s Beach, about three miles northwest of Avalon.

Photos

Report on CBS evacuation

Los Angeles Times news coverage

San Diego Union Tribune – Associated Press news coverage

You can make a direct financial donation to support ñ’s work at Campus by the Sea by following this link.

News Keywords

Camps

Mon, 14 May 2007 05:00:00 +0000 webteam@intervarsity.org 7999 at Campus by the Sea Evacuated /news/campus-by-the-sea-evacuated

About Us Menu

What We Believe

Our Purpose

Financial Info

2022-2023 Annual Report

Leadership

ñ and IFES History

News

Press Room

Contact Us

News

Campus by the Sea Evacuated

ñ’s Campus by the Sea (CBS) is “singed around the edges,” but intact, camp director Susie Veon reported by cell phone at mid morning. There’s no damage at the camp from the fire that has burned over 4,000 acres on Santa Catalina island. The camp buildings are wet because they were hosed down, and the camp is covered with ash. Surrounding hillsides were still smoldering but the wind seemed to be pushing the fire back, away from the camp. It appeared as though the worst was over, since burned out areas now offered a fire break between the areas still burning and the camp location.

Five volunteers remained at the camp, checking on spot fires around the canyons through the morning. Since restoring power to homes, businesses and public facilities is the first priority, power at the camp is not expected to return until the middle of next week, at the earliest.

The camp is not available for groups that were scheduled this weekend and next week but ñ’s Associate Regional Director Tom Allen reports those groups have located alternate facilities.

Most of the staff was evacuated from the camp to the city of Avalon, three miles away, at around three o’clock Thursday afternoon. They had about 30 minutes notice, just enough time to hose down the camp before they lost power and phone communication. Evacuated at the same time were 130 middle school students, mostly from Scottsdale, Arizona, who were attending the annual Long Beach Marine Institute at CBS.

Luke Ditewig, a member of the camp staff team, was one of those evacuated. “The last we heard before leaving the island (near 10pm), fire had descended half way into our canyon and was moving slowly,” he reported. “It had moved further into Toyon, the canyon/camp next to us. It was quite surreal leaving on the boat and seeing the island in flames, especially with the largest flames seeming to be near our camp.”

Hundreds of other Santa Catalina island residents, tourists and campers were also evacuated, as wildfires swept through dry brush. Most of the firefighting resources focused on Avalon, since that is the population center of the island.

News reports say that only one home on the outskirts of Avalon was lost to the flames.
