I believe detours can be part of God’s divine plan. That has been true in my life. One of my first jobs was at an all-news radio station, and it gave me skills for writing on deadline. My job as a newspaper reporter honed my writing skills for my first documentary. My job as a telephone solicitor gave me confidence to “cold call,” which I needed later for raising money. My work with ��ñ��’s 2100 Productions sharpened my skills to think biblically. These were my “divine detours” on the way to my passion of making films.

Here is my advice: Let yourself be mentored at a “job.” Sharpen and hone your skills at someone else’s expense. Gain your credentials. Build your reputation. None of it will be lost, if it’s in God’s hands. And you can make your parents happy, too, for their investment in your education. Assure them that you are willing to learn before you launch. Being mentored is an investment in your own future and you will have a great launch towards not only making your dreams and passions come true, but in living the creative life God has called you to.

Video Focus on Faith

(Madison WI) — The 2008 Faith in Focus Awards posted at faithvisuals.com recognized Micro-Enterprise, a video from ��ñ��’s Twentyonehundred Productions, as the website’s top documentary of 2007. “This powerful video from Twentyonehundred Productions … shows people acting decisively and effectively in unjust situations,” wrote faithvisuals.com assistant editor Ryan Hamm. The video was produced for showing at ��ñ��’s Urbana 06 Student Missions Convention and uploaded to faithvisuals.com in 2007.

A production titled Intersect|Culture was judged a co-winner in the category of best series. The series was produced cooperatively with Christianity Today International to answer the question: “How can followers of Christ be a counterculture for the common good?”

In addition to winning critical acclaim, a list of the most popular faithvisuals.com videos for 2007 also shows two ��ñ�� videos in the top ten. Listed at #4 was Poverty, a mini-documentary that contrasts poverty and affluence, uploaded March 2006. The #6 most popular video of 2007 was O Come O Come Emmanuel, a music worship video also uploaded in March 2006.

“We are honored to receive recognition for the communication tools that we produce,” said Scott Wilson, the director of Twentyonehundred Productions. “We are even more pleased that they are being used to spread the gospel.”

Twentyonehundred Productions is the media unit of ��ñ�� and has been producing award-winning media for use in evangelism and discipleship for more than 35 years.

Reflecting the Glory of God Through Communication Arts

They created the stage backdrop and produced all of the videos shown during the Urbana 06 program. They spend much of their time creating videos for use on campus and in churches that speak to students about a variety of issues. They take the pulse of the student generation by conducting video interviews on timely subjects and they gather footage for ��ñ�� archives.

They are “twentyonehundred productions,” the media division of ��ñ�� Christian Fellowship, whose mission is to create communications tools that influence the hearts and minds of students and faculty.

Scott Wilson, director of communication for ��ñ�� and director of twentyonehundred productions, said twentyonehundred productions “seeks to reflect back through the communication arts the glory of God.”

Twentyonehundred productions began in the 1960s when Eric Miller, a student at Fuller Seminary, and some fellow students used slides and music to produce an evangelistic multi-media presentation that they took to Nairobi, Kenya. In 1970, ��ñ�� asked Miller and his friends to create a media show to use among college students. This show, the first of its kind using multiple slide projectors, was shown to thousands of people at Urbana 70.

They worked under the name Multi-Media Communication until they realized that the initials MMC were the Roman numerals for 2,100. They changed the name to twentyonehundred productions and it stuck.

Twentyonehundred productions has evolved into a team known for its quality films and compelling communication.

“We want to create pieces that sit along side the best,” said associate director Nate Clarke. “The quality of the work that we do reflects what we believe about God.”

At Urbana, twentyonehundred sent out three electronic news gathering crews (ENG crews) to do interviews and gather footage. The production team then edited and archived its work. Clarke said that by 10:30 p.m. the foundation for the daily film summaries was prepared, and by 1:00 or 2:00 a.m., the summary was completed.

Twentyonehundred productions also designed the stage backdrop, signs and other artwork for Urbana 06. Wilson said, “We began with the word of God and spent months studying it and thinking about it conceptually, and then we began to apply that to design.”

Twentyonehundred has been preparing for Urbana since November 2005, said Clarke. “We consciously made a decision at this Urbana to move toward story-based narrative documentary videos. As we created videos to equip God’s people to do God’s mission, we felt that story was the best way to do that.”

All the staff at twentyonehundred productions raise substantial support from churches and other sources. While ��ñ�� gives them some money, most of this money goes toward media production.

“It’s important to have students and those familiar with student culture on the ��ñ�� twentyonehundred productions communications team, said twentyonehundred production associate and intern coordinator Glenn Griffin during a recent chapel service at ��ñ��’s National Service Center. Effectively communicating the gospel to college students is one of ��ñ��’s highest priorities. An internship program helps twentyonehundred accomplish that goal.

Five twentyonehundred interns spoke on a panel at the chapel service. They were: Shelli Daniels, Winona State University, (Minnesota); Kimberly Stark, Appalachian State University (North Carolina); Courtney Letkewicz, Illinois Wesleyan University; Grete Bauder, Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania); and Bethany Moyer, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. All are going to be entering their senior year in college this fall except Grete, who is a recent graduate. Intern Christa Ebert, North Park University (IL) was not able to participate in the chapel service.

Each of the interns talked about her ministry involvement on her campus.

“At my school they don’t quite understand that you can be a creative thinker and you can be a revolutionary in your thoughts and be a Christian. The biggest need on my campus is for people to understand that being a Christ follower is revolutionary.”

“There are a lot of people at my school who grew up in the church but have decided to pull away from that because they’ve seen a lot of hypocrisy. So a lot of what we try to do is show authenticity, that Jesus is more than just a religion. He’s someone that you have to have a relationship with. A lot of people get that confused.”

“A lot of people at my school have grown up in a Christian home and once they get to school they go crazy. I speak from personal experience, I tried that for awhile too. Then a lot of people become parched. They’re hungry but they don’t want to go back to their parent’s religion. We try to show people that God is not a God of their parent’s denomination, he’s a personal God. He goes beyond whatever you grew up with.”

“A lot of the work at our school was building community and pulling people out of themselves. Work and school work was their highest priority. We ended up asking, ‘What is that for? Why are you doing that? What are you going to do with that when you graduate?’ They were not thinking about their spiritual lives. We wanted to stop people from being apathetic and develop them into world changers.”

“The 2004 election was a growing experience. We learned a lot about who we were as a chapter and what we were driven by. We learned that we don’t need to push our personal needs onto people. We started impact teams and made a big push for evangelism, relationship evangelism. We looked for people to start friendships with and developed friendships.”

Each intern also talked about what the experience of working with twentyonehundred productions meant to her.

“I’ve known for a long time that I’ve wanted to use the gifts God has given me in art for him in some way. Being here has been really good for me, to see people who love God like I do and who long to see God communicated in a way that is relevant to students like me who are trying to find God.”

“[Being a twentyonehundred intern] exceeded my expectations. They’ve actually let me do stuff. I like the collaborative team approach.”

“I’ve gone through a lot of hard work and training. I want to dedicate that to God and what better way than to be here, working for him.”

“It’s been a blessing in many, many ways. God has put me in a place where I know I want to be involved in missions.”

“I didn’t know at all what to expect when I came here. It’s different from working with a big corporation [like I did] last year. I’m experiencing the body of Christ, with all of its talents and abilities. Working on the graphics team is awesome, it’s such a creative group of people.”

“It’s a true give and take,” Glenn said. “By having college students or those who have recently been in college as a part of our team, we receive expertise from the field. In return we offer them an opportunity to develop as Christian communicators and Christian artists. There are not a lot of places where that combination can develop.”
